The European supercomputing and data capacity will increase to the exascale and post-exascale in the next decade.

This offers unprecedented opportunities to the field of materials research. Our challenge lies in redesigning the codes and the data ecosystem in order to take advantage of this new computational power.

The mission of MaX is to develop the technologies and make them available for large and growing base of researchers in the materials domain.

We enable the quantum materials discovery and design in frontier science and industrial technologies.

Our goals are achieved by:

  • bringing the most successful and widely used open-source, community codes in quantum simulations of materials towards exascale and extreme scaling performance;
  • enabling the convergence of high-performance and high-throughput computing with high-performance data analytics in the materials domain;
  • co-designing activities to ensure that future HPC architectures are well suited for materials domain applications and viceversa;
  • widening the access to codes and engaging academic and industrial communities, by providing workflows and turn-key solutions and also training for broader  and different pool of users and developers.

MAX is a coordinated effort for an outstanding team of European leaders in the materials domain, prominent European HPC centres, technology partners and training & communication experts, and MAX is proud to contribute to the long term EuroHPC strategy and community.
