womENcourage 2019: Workshop 2 on “Gendering ICT”

The 6th ACM Celebration of Women in Computing: womENcourage 2019 will be held in Rome,  Italy on September 16-18, 2019. This event will bring together people in the computing profession and related technical fields to exchange knowledge and experience and provide special support for women who are pursuing their academic degrees and starting their careers in computing.

The three-day event includes a Hackathon, Workshops, Posters, Technical Talks, Career Fair, Panel Discussions and two Interdisciplinary Research Tracks on fascinating topics such as Conscious Cities and Artificial Intelligence in Medicine.

One of the workshops happening on 17 September at 2:00 PM to 4:30 PM CEST (in Library room) entitled “Gendering ICT” does not only imply to change the numbers of women in CS/CE but also to address the problem of including the gender dimension in the contents of CS/CE. This workshop aims to:

  • Analyzing the most common stereotypes and gender-clichéd images about women in ICT causing the existing gender gap
  • Comparing the different approaches to promote the presence of women, and particularly young women, in ICT education and research and stimulating effective networking among projects
  • Exploring new communication languages for the debate around the gender bias in CS/CE, and the subsequent ethical issues it poses
  • Developing gendered innovation in CS/CE, with new general questions to take into account a gender point of view
  • Facing the problem of designing algorithmic methodologies that do not subsume social bias about sex, gender and race.

Some interventions of the organizers will describe the different aspects of the WS concept, a short experiment on gender biases will follow and the UN Plan for Gender Equality in ICT will be presented. A wider discussion among participants on how to reach the intended goals will close the WS.
